Colour as texture, precision as a principle – Carole Baijings’s designs meld depth with clarity. Colour, material and form have been inseparable in her creations for more than 25 years. The Dutch designer first gained international recognition as a cofounder of the Scholten & Baijings in Amsterdam, where she remained a defining force until 2019 – but also through her many collaborations with renowned brands such as HAY, MINI, Maharam, IKEA & Samsung. She now works independently between Amsterdam and Paris as one of Europe’s leading designers.
Baijings’s work ranges from ceramics and glass to textiles and furniture. Her signature studio-style approach always sees her create colours, materials and models by hand. Her proximity to the object is reflected in the meticulous proportions, surfaces and details of her creations. Reduction, says Baijings, is a tough discipline – because the clearer the design, the more crucial the execution and finish. She draws her inspiration from nature, but also from graphic systems, grids and layers, striving throughout to combine intense colour with visual finesse.
For Schönbuch, Carole Baijings has created TOMO, a versatile family of side tables defined by crisp, rectangular forms that bring together planes of colour to form innovative visual units. Her collaboration with Schönbuch also includes a limited edition of the wall-mounted LINE coat rack, created in collaboration with Apartment 8. For this, Baijings developed three finely balanced colour gradients that lend the design a new visual depth. Both TOMO and the LINE Special Edition live from the precise interplay between colour and reduction.
